Having done TotD I think it’s a bit overrated. Sure it’s a very fun road, but it’s not really any different from other twisty mountain back  roads.

I had a conversation with someone once (it might of been on oppo too..) but they lived here in Colorado, and mentioned that the ToD looked cool and was considering a road trip to drive it . I was like “DUde! you don’t have to travel 2000 miles for a curvy road! Look where we live!!!”

Maybe I shouldn’t have said overrated. Overhyped would probably be the better term. Sure it’s cool to check out if you’re in the area, and there is some connection to the past, especially if you're a  biker, but as a destination? Not so much. It was a lot less intense than I'd been lead to believe. I'll take a mountain pass out west over it for sure.

Yeah— I can see that.. I love the “I survived (or conquered) the ToD” t-shirts you see...

“Whoa dude- you survived a 35mph road with some curves! sick!!” lol

It does unfortunately take lives. Because it’s narrow and twisty it’s not uncommon for people to cross over the centre line around some of the sharper corners. I hit it in February so maybe only saw a dozen or so cars, but two of them in the oncoming lanes were partially in my lane as I came around a corner, and while it’s not as extreme as some of the cliffs out west, it’s still a big feeling of nowhere to go with the uphill side being straight up and the downhill side being just as straight down. And with the reputation of the road there’s more people out there pushing the boundaries of their skill (and exceeding speed limits) making it all the more common for oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road. The Gopro makes it look like it wasn’t even that close of a near miss, what with not really making out where the lines are and distorting distances, but the 4Runner that goes by around 13:30 was far enough into my lane that it took my heart a minute or two to settle back down.

I really don’t know how well the Niva would fare against a body-on-frame SUV that outweighs it by double, but I do know it wouldn’t have been great at all for someone on a bike who came around that corner at moderate speed. If I’d been pushing the Lada to m ore than eight tenths around corners, or ignoring the speed limit , that could have been ugly.

The hype definitely makes it more dangerous. On the roads out west the speed limits tend to be higher, but people generally aren’t pushing performance limits, because they’re just going about their day-to-day business.

Tl/dr, irresponsible people suck.
